The Pros and Cons of AI Copywriting

Updated: Sep 12, 2023

How much time and effort will artificial intelligence really save you?

The conversation around artificial intelligence is heated right now. At the centre of this debate lays copy and content writing tools such as Chat GPT, OwlyWriter, Jasper, Copy.ai, QuillBot and more.

With a mixture of opinions circulating, it can be hard to understand the pros and cons of AI writing tools. So, I’m here to help you navigate this grey area.

What is AI copywriting?

While each platform differs slightly, they are essentially programmes that use natural language-processing software and machine-learning capabilities to create various types of content – from essays, to blog posts, social media captions, scripts and more.

Pros of AI

  • CONVENIENT: Due to its ability to understand human behaviour, AI technology generates direct answers to questions instantly, saving you the hassle of combing the web for specific information.

  • TIME EFFICIENT: Using AI to generate written content for your business can help you save time and fly through your to-do list.

  • COST EFFECTIVE: Many platforms including Chat GPT have an entry level programme that is free to use.

  • NATURAL-SOUNDING CONVERSATION: A major strength of AI is its ability to generate human-like conversation and coherent, contextually appropriate responses.

  • LEARNING / RESEARCH: AI learns and improves with use, working with its user to build upon their prompts and ideas.

Cons of AI

  • NO REPLACEMENT FOR HUMAN PROFESSIONALS: We must remember that there is always room for error when it comes to AI. These bots cannot fact-check as thoroughly as humans and, despite their talents, the content they produce has been known to sound too formulaic. There is simply no replacement for a good copywriter and marketing specialist.

  • STIFLES CREATIVITY: Becoming reliant on AI to generate new business models and written content runs the risk of losing our individual creativity.

  • NOT ENTIRELY RELIABLE: Data available on the internet is used to train AI models, which introduces the risk of bias and false information. These bots cannot verify the accuracy of the information they generate and have been known to fabricate information to fill gaps in their knowledge.

  • THREAT TO HUMAN CONNECTION: With such a tool at our disposal it can be easy to turn to AI to answer any questions we have rather than turning to a colleague for help or an expert for advice. Nothing beats the experience and knowledge of a real person.

A professional's approach to AI writing tools

As an experienced copywriter, I'm happy to admit I've used AI to help me with some of my own work and would recommend it to others too. If I want to be reminded of a particular topic, I find AI useful to generate a broad overview that I can scan quickly to jog my memory and use as a guide of all the information I can include in my own writing. That said, there's been plenty of times I've picked up mistakes, so would never confidently use it for researching and writing about a completely new subject.

Specialising in aesthetic medicine, a computer is never going to be part all the conversations I have with leading clinicians and innovators in the field, nor is it going to understand the intricacies of techniques and patient demand that you learn from real-life situations.

If you're going to give AI copywriting a go, I'd urge you to do so with caution. Fact check everything and don't forget to add some personality! There's nothing worse than sounding like a robot online – you should be using your writing to build connections and trust with your audience.
